InQuizitor Case Study
Maths Revision
The James Young High School
The James Young High School is a comprehensive secondary school of approximately 1100 students situated in Livingston, one of Scotland's new towns.
InQuizitor was first implemented in the Maths department, then spread throughout the school based on their enthusiastic reports.
How InQuizitor Was Used
InQuizitor was used with the department's "class in a box"; a set of portable laptops with wireless connections to the school network.
Initially, Quizzes were devised with content at the level pupils were working towards (eg a student who had attained level D was given a Quiz containing level E questions) but teachers observed this often resulted in students not achieving enough time to let them access even the first game. Redesigned Quizzes combined questions drawn from the "attained" and "working towards" levels.
"The outcome this time was extremely positive. The students were achieving high scores and competing against classmates to be class champion in the Quiz. The students were answering all the questions at both levels successfully and at all levels were really involved in their revision using InQuizitor."
InQuizitor was later installed on computers in the library to allow access by other departments. Even before the students were informed that the software was there, the Maths department received a "panicky" e-mail from the librarian "asking if it was OK that the students were accessing the Maths quizzes at lunchtime. They had found the program themselves on the computers and were actually doing Maths quizzes in their own free time!!"
Next step for the Maths department is to review previous years' mock exam scripts at S4 (Yr 10) and identify common errors. They will then prepare InQuizitor Quizzes with "simpler questions based on these common errors in an attempt to stop the errors being made in the students' final exams."
